Exhibition Graphics
A self-taught artist with encyclopedic and cross-cultural interests, Jean-Michel Basquiat was influenced by comics, advertising, children’s sketches, Pop art, hip-hop, politics, and everyday life. Basquiat: The Unknown Notebooks emphasizes the distinct interplay of text and images in Basquiat’s art, providing unprecedented insight into the importance of writing in the artist’s process.
The exhibition graphics are minimal with wall text and pull quotes framed by red and blue rules that recall the composition notebooks favored by the artist and a sans serif typeface inspired by Basquiat’s bold and deliberate penmanship. Featured prominently on the title wall is a large reproduction of a previously unseen Lee Jaffe photograph of the artist.
